Essex are one of the brands I most associate with “gnomeitis” the proclivity for very squat and stout figures. While I find I do not like them much, they do have a number of points in their favor. First, they have a very broad range, which means you can build almost all of your army with just one brand of figures. Second, they are very well made - without exception mine have all been well cast. Clean, crisp, and with just moderate detail, they are easy to paint. Third, they are remarkably consistent from figure to figure. If you like one you’ll probably like them all. They come 8 infantry to the pack, all in identical poses. If you like highly regimented units, take a look at Essex.

Essex tend to have moderate detail. It is a design philosophy that I think is well suited to wargaming. Instead of trying to put every little detail on the sculpt, they focus on those distinctive details which will make for an easily identified figure on the gaming table. For example, this bayonet has a simple block for the flintlock, and no barrel hoops. The cuffs are raised from the sleeves, but have no buttons or lace. The detail that is sculpted, however, is very neat, clearly delineated, and a pleasure to paint.

My major issue with Essex is the anatomy. This fusilier’s hands are huge and his feet small. His legs are too short and thin for his torso. Overall, he looks like more of a gnome than a human.

I also find Essex poses can be a bit strange. This fellow is far too in love with his musket! I can’t imagine what he’s doing, and I don’t think a battalion of fusiliers engaged in a death grip with their muskets would inspire me.

So, well made, just not my cup of tea at all. Decide for yourself.
